Nine months before Cristmas there is the Feast of the Announciation of Christ. This day has many other names, amongst them are: Lady Day, and The Day of Our Lady. Christmas day is of cause the 25:th of December, and consequently The day of Our Lady is on the 25:th of March.
In Swedish The day of Our Lady is written "Vårfrudagen", yes in Swedish it's one word. And pronouced at speed it's easy to mispronounce or mishear that for another word in the same language: "Våffeldagen" or Waffle day. As a consequence, this has created the tradition of eating waffles on this day.
This is also the inspiration for the image created for the month of March.
The figurine is of cause a depiction of Virgin Mary, as is indicated by the blue color of her mantle. This is an attribute that traditionally indicates that an image is a depiction of Virgin Mary, while others are: a crown of 12 stars, a pregnant woman, roses, a woman with a child, or a woman trampling a snake.
In Sweden waffles are frequently eaten wit whipped cream and some jam. It does not have to be strawberry jam, but the combination taste is excellent and it looks great in a photo shot. The blue color is also the liturgical color for the time of fasting, from Ash Wednesday till the day before Maundy Thursday. Maundy Thursday is regarded as a feast day, and hence the liturgical color is white.
